The main church of the Solovetsky Monastery, the stone Transfiguration of Our Saviour (Spaso-Preobrazhensky) Cathedral, was under construction. In the 1550s and 1560s, roads, canals, and harbours were built across the archipelago. The monastery became the spiritual, economic, and administrative centre of the Pomor region.
